body and subtle body
Questioner 1: Could you elaborate about birth and death?
t.k. If I hold my hand far over here, outside the scope of my peripheral vision, it is unseen. If I move it like this into my peripheral vision then this is birth. The duration of life is its movement across the plane of vision and …. see now, the hand moves outside my peripheral vision …. that is death.
The body you know and identify with is a tiny bit of the whole of what is your reality – not “your” in the egoic sense, or the sense of what is felt as identity. In fact in reality, enlightenment, there is no sense of “my identity”. Awareness is dumbed down as consciousness within the package of this body mind as limit - a disidentification from identification trapped in this limit must happen for a greater aspect to be known.
The physical body, mind, feelings gross and subtle trap, fixate attention so that the greater is not known. Attention trapped in this sphere is also trapped in the axioms of this sphere – birth, death, suffering, hope, fear, duality, separation, union. It is not that when attention is untrapped that this sphere must be negated – merely that it is seen as it is – a small, temporary modification within a mysterious vastness inherently simple and unbinding - like a dream. A wave rising and falling on the ocean.
The physical body is one of several bodies. When attention is not fixated, limited to a particular body then the next more subtle body comes to be known - the physical, the subtle, the casual and the great casual which is the I AM – and beyond all these there is the possibility of discovering the ultimate which is beyond all of this. About that no word can be said.
Each body has its own domain, its own logic and axioms of functioning. Each has its own seeming fixed reality which claims to be final. Each body can trap attention in a new seeming realization of reality. When attention is fixated in the physical body the child discovers itself, its body, its mind, its world. All this seems ultimate but in a rare few there is the longing beyond the limit of this. Sometimes when people in the midst of spiritual practice discover the subtle body with its blisses, visions ect they naturally think this is the ultimate and on and on. It is very rare that when attention comes to rest in the infinite bliss of the I AM, and the consciousness at its most fundamental, that anyone still pushes to go further. This realization of the ‘Infinite Self” seems absolute but it is not.
Even after this the consciousness which abides above the body mind in the space of infinity can fall into the Heart and be eaten by perfect utter mystery beyond even the most subtle notion, concept, Absolute and Self. When consciousness is swallowed by the absolute then unborn wisdom awareness – which feels no particular identity at all – abides as both the nothingness (its own essence) and the appearing (its own radiance). This is a mystery where AwarenessAppearance are a single word and both these inhere in a perfect non identity of mystery.
In this birth and death – even of the universe gross and subtle – have come to be known as passing moments within a wholeness of mystery. The I AM comes to be known as a simple misunderstanding of the luminous empty clarity of mystery. It seems knowingness implies a knower but it does not. It seems that appearances imply external existent objects but they do not. It seems the implied subjective knower and objective appearances imply self and other, birth and death but these implications are simply misunderstandings - mist that dissolves in the sunlight of pure unborn wisdom awareness that knows the reality of all appearing and disappearing .... and then, the body, all bodies gross and subtle, live in as Love with and to others in simplicity – jut simplicity.
