Bite size teachings across 30 years.

For 30 years t.k. has offered radical spiritual teachings on the divine nature of non-dual contemplation and realization. Enlightened mind here and now, born from this culture, addressing the issues of this time and place t.k. offers transmission through countless forms - words being one of them. Here are some short pieces from his teachings over the last 30 years.

The Napoleon Delusion

The bifurcation of that singularity called AwarenessAppearance by confusion, leads to primordial alienation whose ache is loneliness in mind heart body. Abiding loneliness leads to the fantasy of Oneness or the duplicity of enumerations, the falsity of bondage, the medicinal lie called enlightenment. Efforts to assuage alienated loneliness within ever changing closed loop confusion realms leads only to frustration and aggression.

Question: Rinpoche, I am lost reading this and don't understand any of it....

Dearest A,
There are many spiritual efforts but in the end they all are attempts to address a single issue … the original innocence and bright virtue that is undivided AwarenessAppearance which has been lost in the superstition of concrete belief in subject object duality.

Originally, which is always atemporaly the immediacy of this moment, awareness is the brightness of an uncaused luminescing across an expanse of unutterable divine mystery. Appearance is the frolic of that same luminosity. The seeming external appearances and the seeming internal awareness (dimmed down into consciousness – awareness + confusion through body’s sense fields … awareness unwed to confusion can also function through and as sense fields) are in fact the play of mysterious wholeness.

Originally the expanse/essence of mystery giving birth to awareness as it ownmost nature is a perfect purity. The appearances, a frolic of the luminous nature, are nothing other than bright virtue. They are not two, nor are they one, nor are they any other number, nor are they “against” particularization as temporary play-fullness.

The original emptiness expanse and luminous clarity are in a perpetual dynamic union beyond any notion of separation. Their union gives birth to the magical child called appearances. But in this wonderment of play there is no becoming lost, straying from the original state, expulsion from the garden…. It is just a simplicity of naturalness and temporariness manifest for the joy of expression.

Mind itself shows itself to itself as itself. The expanse of unborn wisdom awareness is also a dense array of beauty truth goodness and this incarnates in the seeming meatiness of realms and beings.

If one alienates awareness from appearance then there is the confusion of subject and object as seeming concrete realities. If this happens, body, mind, heart experience a terrible ache of alienation and loneliness. When this happens one begins to search out solutions to problems that never actually happened – like a man thinking he is Napoleon looking for the solution to his problem in a new battle of Waterloo. Both Oneness, as a spiritual fantasy, and twoness, or many-ness are confusions arisen from a base confusion. The feeling of bondage is an illusion and the concept enlightenment is the curative medicinal illusion. In truth there never was an actual problem simply a bit of wrong perception and a cascading series of wrong conclusion based on mistaken implications.

If the Napoleon delusion is lived out and looks for security in false identity then its efforts will become increasing complex, confused, deluded and aggressive as confusion digs in ever deeper and the closed loop of pain tightens.

The path of Vajrayana does not begin by accepting your stance of illness but with a transmission of “the view” of inherent, abiding health. This stance makes the methods an organic evolvement of health rather than techniques of deluded self-effort in relation to sickness. This is why Vajrayana is called “the resultant path” because the starting point is the also the result – the truth of Buddha Nature.

One must stop reacting to falsehood and generating schemes based in the disposition of illness… as Trungpa Rinpoche sued to say one must become “hopeless” about all such spiritually materialistic stratagems. - with love, t.
