Incarnation and Transcendence
Incarnate, to make meat. To meet and greet. Hello appearance! To flesh out the implication of awareness' luminosity. Empty expanse and luminous non contrivance meet in the bed of spontaneous presencing and, lo and behold, the magical illusory child of appearance is born.... a la la for the lack of birth control. - t.k. foolishness in the greenhouse this morning as the dawn rays broke the edge of night.
Ahhhh to read the words is a delight but so very few wish (or seem able to overcome the dictatorship of reason's mistaken view) to take on the challenge of practice that allows the mind, the body, feeling, qualities, actions to be sublimed in reality. Heartbreaking, unbearbaly sad .... an infinity of deathless (and birthless) wonderment is traded for table scraps from delusion's halloween ball.
In Vajrayana we do not simply train body, mind, energies to become a vehicle for realization - this personal goal is crucial but also partial. We also train so that body, mind, energies become a vehicle for the manifestation of compassionate activity - a place for the incarnation of wisdom through skillful means. - t.k.
What is the difference between Realisation and compassionate activity? I was assuming the latter is a "by-product" of Realisation?
Yes, it is a by-product (though it can be 'practiced' prior to realization as well but without the same spontaneous purity) ... yes, by-product BUT .... the efficacy with which the body mind and energies are able to incarnate that urge of c...ompassion depends on the training prior to realization. A race car driver given a crappy car still won't be able to do very much with it. Over lifetimes and lifetimes the Vajrayanist fine tunes, develops, refines and strengthens the mechanism that will incarnate, allow the spontaneous urge of compassion to incarnate - be made flesh (latin in+carn meaning flesh or meat). ........... This is why we practice for the two aims 1. realization for oneself (without realization compassion will always carry the seeds of delusion and therefore the seeds of perpetuating suffering so, therefore - even for the sake of othrs - compassion must also work toward realization so that its actions have the greatest benefit.) 2. for the benefit of all precious beings who have been our own caring mothers in one lifetime or another. ..... The work of part 2 is a. to find wisdom so that our compassionate activity is wise and helps not only ameliorate the symptoms but also helps cut the root of suffering - and - b. develops the skill-filled means, methods, to bring wisdom into activity in accord with the needs of beings, time and place. ........... As authetnic wisdom grows it sees the importance of part 2. more and more (because as mind becomes spacious its obsession with self concern lessens and its natural love and care for others increases. As this happens mind realizes it nees to cultivate the means whereby is increasing longing of joy, love and compassion can become effective action...... so the cultivation of practice for the sake of all sentient beings is the natural sign of a maturiing wisdom.
