What are Master and Disciple?
Sometimes ego masquerades as wisdom, or at least an interest in wisdom, and then it co-opts wisdom’s beauty as sales ploy for ego’s ugliness. It is like an ugly man with a paper mask of Brad Pitt. When this happens then spiritual institutions develop along lines of power and hierarchy and the light luminous wisdom aspect is crushed under “us versus” and who is higher and lower mentality. Other times spiriual life develops along the lines of commercialism and wisdom is used as a product like acne cream or a more comfortable mattress. All of these are simply immaturity. Politics and kings, dharma as glitzy magazine add, students and teachers ........
When there is maturity then there can develop a unique relationship between the realizer and the one who longs for realization. This relationship is one of true and free love ... an organic interaction like the sun’s rays on the flower. There is no heavy sense of power but rather a lightness, humor and ease. Certainly there is also great seriousness and careful respect but there is at the heart of it something profoundly simple.
Master and disciple are not student and teacher, parent and child, doctor and patient or any other imaginable relationship. If anything they are tongue and the coolness of water on a hot day. They are sugar and its sweetness. Outside of this simple ease of the deepest most profound level of spiritual relationship everything else is one form or another of egoic desperation and acting out. But, if you are lucky enough to find a true Guru, then you are with one who can not be seduced, cajoled, tricked or manipulated and when all strategies are relinquished and you simply become happily responsible in relation to world and practice then the flower of ease and true love will blossom.
